Itinerary for Finland/Estonia Study Abroad


Helsinki:  May 14th - 16th

  • May 14th - Monday

    • Arrive morning/early afternoon of the 14th, take Finnair City bus (6.30€, 30 minutes) from airport to train station

    • Check in to Forenom Aparthotel Helsinki City, pick up public transportation ticket

    • Take time to rest then explore the city on your own – optional sites to see include Helsinki Cathedral, Rock Church, National Library of Finland, Old Market Hall, walk the Esplanadi, Stockmann’s, Fazer

    • Group dinner at Vapiano’s, Mikonkatu 15, Helsinki

  • May 15th - Tuesday

    • Meet with Pati Rasanen, doctoral student at University of Jyvaskyla, 11am, at Merimiehenkatu 6 C 28, and continue with lunch

    • Visit Suomenlinna in afternoon (via Helsinki City Transport boat)

  • Leave on morning of 16th with 9am departure on Eckerö Line boat


Tallinn:  May 16th – 23rd 

  • May 16th – Wednesday

    • Arrive via Eckerö Line boat at 11:15am

    • Check in to Park Inn City Center hotel

    • KGB Museum tour at 5pm

  • May 17th  - Thursday

    • Visit Tallinn English College with Kaia Norberg at 10am - 1:45pm

    • U.S. Embassy visit at 2:40pm; meet with Jane Susi, Estonia Fulbright

  • May 18th - Friday

  • May 19th - Saturday

  • May 20th - Sunday

    • Lennusadam Seaplane Harbor Museum at 11am

    • Visit Kalamaja, Muhu leib, Balti Jaama Turg, La Muu ice cream factory - La Kita café,

    • Group dinner TBD location

  • May 21st - Monday

    • Train to Tartu

    • Dinner with Brenda Morton (Education Fulbright Scholar), 7pm Püssirohu Kelder, Lossi 28

  • May 22nd - Tuesday​

    • Estonian National Museum

    • Late afternoon train back to Tallinn; check back in to Park Inn

  • May 23rd - Wednesday

    • Visit Estonian school in Lasnamäe area, Tallinna Kuristiku Gümnaasium at 10am through lunch

    • Meet with representatives of Tallinn University from 1-4pm to discuss Estonian education and research interests

    • Estonian Museum of Occupations

  • Leave on the 24th with noon departure on Eckerö Line boat


Jyvaskyla:  May 24th – May 30th

  • May 24th - Thursday

    • Arrive at Helsinki on Eckerö Line boat at 2:15pm (continue on to Jyvaskyla via VR Train with 3:49pm departure arrive at 7:40pm)

    • Check in to Hotelli Alba

  • May 25th - Friday

    • Meet with graduate students, meet in lobby at 8:45am

    • Lunch and then campus tour with Samira Sayal at noon, at Ruusupuisto building

  • May 26th - Saturday

    • Free day

  • May 27th - Sunday​

    • Finnish Baseball, 4pm

    • Group dinner 8pm, TBD location

  • May 28th – Monday

    • Visit Norssi school from 8am - 12:30pm

    • Meet with Jussi Välimaa at 1pm Ruusupuisto B102 - Emma

  • May 29th – Tuesday

    • Meet with Juhani Rautopuro and Jouni Välijärvi, Finnish Institute for Educational Research, 9-11am

    • Meetings at 2pm for Higher Ed and Ed Leadership students

    • Visit Natural History Museum of Central Finland and view from tower

    • Visit Alvar Aalto museum

  • Leave on the 30th with a 10:15am departure on the VR Train


Helsinki:  May 30th – June 2nd

  • May 30th - Wednesday

    • Arrive via VR Train from Jyvaskyla at 2:09pm

    • Check in to Forenom Aparthotel Helsinki City

    • Tour Seurasaari Island (Bus 24, 15min from downtown) and open-air museum stop at Sibelius Monument on the way

  • May 31st - Thursday

    • Optional daytrip to Porvoo

    • Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art optional

  • June 1 - Friday

    • Meet with Finland Fulbright, 10am

  • June 2 - Saturday

    • depart from Helsinki
